Maple Dell Ranch raises heritage breed pigs in a manner that respects the animals' natural tendencies. This means that the pigs free range on lush grass pasture for their entire lives in a small familial group and are handled with low stress techniques. Maple Dell hogs do not receive any added hormones or antibiotics and great effort is taken to minimize any stress to the animals. Our hogs wander in their pasture, they feel sunshine, wind, and rain (but they have a nice shelter too), they take mud baths and the root around in the pasture. We use humane handling techniques that employ the use of "pig psychology" rather than force. Commercial hog production involves indoor confinement production where pigs do not venture outdoors and they often lack appropriate social interaction with other pigs which causes undue stress on the animals.
Modern commercial pigs are bred for "lean", "white" meat. The heritage breed pigs that we raise are hybrid breeds consisting of Red wattle, Mulefoot, Kunekune, and Hampshire crosses. The heritage breed pigs produce a redder, more marbled pork with an unctuous flavor. Renowned chefs around the world are sourcing heritage pork such as the Maple Dell's in order to put the most flavorful pork available on their menus!
